This course examines the continuing transition to a post-colonial, post-apartheid Southern Africa. Critical challenges to the consolidation of democracy and development in the region will be considered through several country case studies, which will focus on the changing nature of the state, the impact of economic liberalisation and globalisation, and responses from emerging social movements in the region.
