Through a study of works in their historical, social and aesthetic context, this course explores literature in the post-colonial Francophone world. It highlights the uses of literary genres and the creation of new forms to express the struggle for unity and social renewal.Prerequisite: AP/FR 2200 6.00 with a minimum grade requirement of C. Course credit exclusions: GL/FRAN 3923 3.00, GL/HUMA 3923 3.00.

This course studies a selection of literary works, representative of a given historical period in certain Francophone regions; notably Africa, Maghreb and the Antilles. Published before or after these areas gained independence, the works express a profound desire for liberation, in the broadest sense of the term, as well for individual or collective self-affirmation. We will study these works in their historical, cultural and social contexts, establishing the possible relationships with other contemporary artistic movements, or with the prevalent intellectual trends of the day. We will thus discover in these works stylistic aspects imbued with both subversive and constructive elements.
While in-class discussions in small groups will form the basis for our study and analysis of these works, we will also use audiovisual documents to give a more varied and concrete dimension to certain readings. The discussions and analytical exercises will aim not only to help students understand the themes and stylistic aspects of a work, but also to develop their critical abilities in order to recognize the different components of a literary text and appreciate its aesthetic dimension. Written and oral assignments will give students the opportunity to develop their research skills, and aptitudes in explanation and argumentation, to better organize their ideas and improve their language abilities.
