Calendar Description / Prerequisite / Co-Requisite
This course engages the first seventy years of China's 100 years of humiliation (1842-1949). We examine China's often violent encounters with foreign powers beginning with the Opium Wars in the mid-19th century. Our focus is on China's efforts from 1800-1911 to become a modern nation through the reform of politics, society and the status of women, and ultimately through rebellion.
