Frames the study of orality and literacy through the perspectives of the media ecology field, a field that studies media environments and their effects on human thought and cultural values. Following from the seminal texts of Walter Ong, the course examines, among others, the works of Marshall McLuhan, Neil Postman, Jacques Ellul, Lewis Mumford, Paul Levinson and Lance Strate. Course credit exclusion: AP/COMN 4317 3.00 (prior to Fall 2012). Open to: 4th year Communication Studies majors only.
